what is was
My courtship with my studio practice has been more weighted lately as the mother of a two-year-old. Deep concentration in the studio is in conflict with the flighty, unstructured play I take part in, leaving my creative self feeling fragmented, like not finishing a sentence.
The solution I have found to this conflict is the ability to work back into works started 6, 8, 10 years ago and find resolution in entirely different ways than I would have discovered then. I am in conversation with a collection of old friends embedded in these unfinished works, unified by my present voice and embracing intuitive play.
Portraits of rocks are sprinkled throughout my photography archive taken from various travels and hikes, both near and far. Over time, the images have evolved to be autobiographical, telling my history of where and when akin to a journal. Layering the formations onto previously unfinished works only deepens this link to my past experiences and past selves. The shifts of altering the same formations create a metaphor for continuity as the past continues to reveal itself to us in both extraordinary and subtle ways.
